Because of the advances in web technology, the demand for graphic designers has grown. However, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, so has the competition for design jobs. In order to be competitive in the job market, the designer working today needs to be trained in a number of skills. While many people possess a natural talent for design, most working designers have received training up to at least the bachelor’s degree level.

    Traditional Art Skills

    • While most graphic designers working today use computer design programs to create their final products, traditional art skills are still required. During the early stages of designing a project, a graphic designer will be expected to draw mock ups. These sketches function in much the same way that a rough draft in writing does. They allow the design project team to see how something will look before it gets to the computer layout phase. Designers learn to draw and paint in design training programs. They also learn about art and design history, from which they can draw ideas for projects. Many times—but not always—these programs are university design degree programs.

    Photography/ Videography

    • Design uses images to convey a message, and today’s designers are expected to know how to use a camera, according to Design Reviver. Additionally, with the advancements in web technology, more of the visuals in design are moving images. While many large design studios may employ a photographer, more often than not you’ll be expected to be the one taking pictures. This isn’t all bad. The designer with a full toolbox is often hired before the one who doesn't possess quite as many skills; it's more economical to do so. Designers can acquire these skills both in a classroom and on their own. Wherever they get the skills, designers should demonstrate in their portfolios that they are familiar with how to use a camera.

    Design, Layout and Typography

    • In the era before the computer, designers needed "only" to worry about whether they could do layout and design on paper. It was a big enough job. However, for a designer to stay competitive in the 21st century she must be able to combine her eye for design and modern technology. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, a designer is responsible for doing design in both the print and web arenas. Additionally, as typography is one of the major elements of design, the modern designer should be well-versed in using typography to convey her message. The BLS site maintains that in order to land a job in the field, most designers need to have at least a bachelor’s degree in order to learn how to master these skills.
