    Prep Work

    • 1). Calculate the size of the shutters by measuring the length of width of the window frames along the outside edges and dividing the width by two.

    • 2). Hold the shutter on the wall against the edge of the window. Position the shutter so there is the same amount of space between the edges of the shutter and top and bottom edges of the window. Make small pencil marks on the wall to mark the top and bottom edges of the shutter.

    • 3). Place the shutter on a workbench or other flat surface. Mark spots 1 1/2 inches from the top and bottom of the shutter in the center of the rail. The rail is the long side of the shutter.

    • 4). Drill a hole through the marks with a 1 1/4-inch drill bit.

    • 5). Mark a spot on the wall 1 1/2 inches in from the marks you made to indicate the top and bottom edges of the shutter.

    Masonry and Brick Siding

    • 1). Drill pilot holes for the masonry anchors on the spots you mark. The pilot holes often should be 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch deeper than the anchors, but follow the instructions as this varies by manufacturer.

    • 2). Install the masonry anchors, following the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

    • 3). Place the shutter on the wall, lining it up with the marks you made.

    • 4). Screw the shutter to the wall.

    Aluminum, Vinyl and Wood Siding

    • 1). Drill 1/4-inch pilot holes into the aluminum or vinyl siding at the marks you make, going deep enough to penetrate the siding but not the wall. For wood siding, use a 1/8-inch drill bit and drill at least 1 3/4 inches deep.

    • 2). Place the shutter on the wall, lining it up with the marks you made.

    • 3). Screw the shutter to the wall.
