Bathtub Replacement Options
- Replacing an old bathtub with a new bathtub is a messy and expensive process. Typically, the bathtub is secured to the floor with plumbing pipes and the surrounding tile and floor stop at the tub's edges. Taking out the old bathtub often requires some destruction of the tile and flooring in the process. Select a new bathtub that fits the same space. Pay to have it installed; it's very heavy and must be done properly or you risk damaging the house with leaking water.
- Chemicals strip the existing glaze from the bathtub and prepare the surface for new glazing. Two coats of epoxy are followed by four coats of polyurethane, with a sanding between each coat. Refinishing is a labor-intensive process and must be done by a professional. The chemicals involved are dangerous and require special venting for safety.
- Line an old cracked porcelain tub with a liner. Liners can't be installed over fiberglass tubs. Look for companies that make an exact mold to fit your tub. Ask questions and avoid companies who make the liner slightly smaller and fill the void with padding. This type of liner doesn't last as long as one that fits precisely.

Take out the old bathtub and replace it with a walk-in shower. Choose a 60-inch walk-in shower so it fits in the space of a standard bathtub, which is also 60 inches long. Look for customized options, like dual shower heads and built-in or fold-down seating.
