If you use Limewire or Kazza to download free music from the internet, you are more likely to pick up a virus or a spyware (and this is probably the major reason why many computers are infected, especially with my friends).
Another way you can get spyware onto your computer is through other software that you have innocently download, but are not aware that they are bundled with spyware.
These programs are not common anymore because the internet police (FTC) are stricter and arresting developers of such rogue software, but never the less you should be wary of such software.
