Why buy fertilizer when you can make it on your own? Even when they have the words "organic fertilizer" plastered on it, don't fall for it! Many new gardeners feel that commercially manufactured fertilizers are the best.
The more seasoned ones, however, would advise you against it since making your own is a lot cheaper, healthier and far safer.
Making your own organic fertilizer is actually very easy.
There are so many recipes available on how to make organic fertilizers.
Many gardeners and farmers are using organic rather than inorganic or chemical fertilizers for many reasons and among these are the ease and accessibility of ones you make on your own.
So here I am to share with you some fertilizer "recipes" that can surely help you out.
Compost One of the most common and effective organic fertilizers is compost.
Follow these procedures for making a compost bin: 1.
Choose a spot that is not too exposed to sunlight with a little shade part of the day.
2.
Mark a rectangular shape with measurements of at least three- by -three feet.
3.
Dig out the area at least six inches down.
Remove all stones, debris and roots from the pit.
4.
Put dried leaves, twigs and other organic materials into the pit.
Do not put inorganic materials into your compost pit such as plastic.
It is a compost pit and not a garbage pit.
5.
Add soil to the pit.
6.
Put holes into the pit so that air can reach the deep layers.
7.
Mix the contents every two weeks.
8.
Sprinkle water into the pit when it becomes dry.
During rainy days, cover the pit with plastic so it will not become soggy.
9.
When compost has completely finished its decomposition cycle, it is now ready to be mixed with soil.
Ants, nematodes and worms are essential in decomposition of organic materials.
But you should remember, you can put any organic materials into your compost pit except for meat, bones, grease and infected plants or any parts of plants that are infected.
Making an Epsom Salt Fertilizer Prepare the following: 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt 1 gallon of water watering container Procedures Simply mix the Epsom salt with water.
Pour into the container.
Water the plants using this solution.
Epsom salt is rich in sulfate and magnesium.
These nutrients are important for plant growth.
Animal Manure Animal wastes are also a good source of nutrients for plants.
All you have to do is to dry them and then mix them with soil.
Blood meal and Bone meal are also good fertilizers.
Well, there you have it! With these fine selections of fertilizers, why would you want to buy commercially manufactured ones?
