When you go shopping for clothes, do you automatically pull out the drabbest, dullest colours you can see, figuring at least if you wear them, you'll blend in to the woodwork? It's time to stop that right now, sister, and learn about the stunning colours that can make a curvaceous girl like you look gorgeous any day of the week.

The truth is, certain colours against certain skin tones can make you look washed out or larger than you really are. A whole lot of drab colours don't look particularly flattering.

We've all heard the mantra "black is slimming" and for 99% of girls, this is true. Not only does black give you a slimmer silhouette, it often gives a lady an extra burst of confidence and elegance. Unlike other colours, black will always be fashionable and always in season. But as well as investing in some stunning black basics, you should branch out into a few more flattering colours. You don't want to look like a recovering Goth all the time, do you?

Purple is the colour of royalty, and also a great colour for plus sized clothing. Purple comes in a variety of hues, from soft, pastel lavenders to rich, deep royal purples. Purple adds a pop to any outfit and makes you look bubbly, vivacious and chic.

Another great colour for ultra-feminine chic is pink. Many girls shy away from pink, but they shouldn't. With many different shades – from pastel pink to fuchsia – there's a pink to suit every girl. Add a touch of feminine to any outfit with a little pink accent.

Blue works well with practically every colour in your wardrobe, and can be used to darken or brighten any outfit. Blue works well for women just beginning to explore the possibilities of colour, as it's not as "out there" as pink or purple.

And lastly, if you want to sizzle with curvy sensuality, you can't go past beautiful, passionate red. Deep reds in particular flatter plus sized women, and, while all over red might draw attention to weight, a few red details on an outfit can slim down your silhouette.
