Security Camera Review

You know you need a security camera.
The problem is what kind of security camera.
There are so many different models in so many different categories it can be more than a little overwhelming for someone who has never purchased these before.
Here we'll break down different the different security camera categories and take a simplified look at each to help better prepare you for shopping for your own camera or system.
CCTV Security Systems These systems monitor and record several devices at once.
These systems are expensive - but if you're looking for multi-zone, continuous monitoring and are willing to pay then this type of camera system if worth the money.
Generally speaking, the units that come with these systems have infrared capability, allowing you to capture and record images both during the day and at night with clarity.
The recording units are weather resistant and can be used both inside and outside.
As an added feature, many CCTV systems come with "web ready" capability, allowing the user to view recorded and live feed from anywhere in the world using the internet.
Hidden Spy and Security Cameras These are made to 'not be noticed'.
Either disguised as something else entirely or made small and inconsequential enough to avoid detection, these are the covert kings! Many of these employ a memory card that can be retrieved at any time, while some even allow for live feed from a small distance away.
The downside to these cameras is that while you can minimize recording time by setting the 'motion activated' recording (if available), you are limited to recording only so much as you memory card will hold.
Though perhaps it's worth mentioning that these days an SD card doesn't cost nearly what it did a year ago.
Outdoor Security Cameras If you need to monitor outdoor locations, these cameras are the way to go.
Some other cameras claim to be 'weather resistant', and they are...
but cannot stand up to being left in the open elements for long periods of time.
Cameras that are specifically designed for outdoor use are sealed and weatherproof, making these cameras robust enough to monitor and protect outdoor areas in any kind of weather.
Self Contained Cameras These types of cameras are exactly what the name implies.
Usually very small and discreet, these cameras are an all in one unit that can be moved from location to location without any hassle.
With the majority of these cameras the size of your palm and retrievable memory cards, hiding and relocating these security cameras is more than simple.
The downside with these cameras remains the same as other 'wireless' cameras, the camera will only record as much footage as your memory card will allow.
Imitation Security Cameras Realistic fake cameras can be almost as effective as the real thing! Highly visible, many complete with blinking red "recording" lights, these lights are an extremely efficient deterrent for burglars and vandals.
Using the cameras alone or as fill in for actively running CCTV systems, these cameras are worth the money.
