The Education Needed to Become a Registered Nurse

    BSN Program

    • A BSN program is a bachelor's of science degree in nursing and typically takes four years to complete. Aspiring nurses can begin their studies at a college or university after graduating from high school.

    ADN Program

    • An ADN program is offered by community and junior colleges and takes about two to three years to complete. An associate's degree is awarded upon graduation.

    Diploma

    • Diploma programs are administered in hospitals and last about three years.

    Accelerated BSN

    • This program is available to individuals who have a bachelor's degree in a different field and would like to move into nursing. These programs generally last about 12 to 18 months.

    Licensing

    • All students who graduate from any of the above programs must then pass a national licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-RN, in order to obtain a nursing license.
