The Education Needed to Become a Registered Nurse
- A BSN program is a bachelor's of science degree in nursing and typically takes four years to complete. Aspiring nurses can begin their studies at a college or university after graduating from high school.
- An ADN program is offered by community and junior colleges and takes about two to three years to complete. An associate's degree is awarded upon graduation.
- Diploma programs are administered in hospitals and last about three years.
- This program is available to individuals who have a bachelor's degree in a different field and would like to move into nursing. These programs generally last about 12 to 18 months.
- All students who graduate from any of the above programs must then pass a national licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-RN, in order to obtain a nursing license.
