Since the beginning time, human beings have collected small, shiny, pretty objects for no better reason than that they are pleasing to look at.
Over time, these small objects have developed into specific items such as jewelry and other small decorative pieces.
Like anything that we consider valuable, we want to take good care of our jewelry and other assorted trinkets, and part of that care is cleaning.
While there are certainly many different ways to clean jewelry, only one has consistently proven to be affective nearly 100% of the time.
Since the technologies inception in the late 40s, ultrasonics have been one of the best ways to clean a wide range of objects, one of the most notable being jewelry.
Ultrasonic works through a process known as cavitation, which is basically the forming of small vacuum bubbles that collapse when they impact upon a surface.
The collapse of the bubbles causes microscopic jets of cleaning solution to hit the surface of what ever you are cleaning.
I personally have a 2.
6 quart ultrasonic unit in my home and I love it to death.
Interestingly enough though, I do not use it to clean jewelry, as I own none.
While often marketed as "jewelry cleaners", any ultrasonic unit can be used to clean any number of objects around the home.
I use my ultrasonic cleaner to clean my fishing gear, such as reel parts and hooks and the like.
Many hobbyist's enjoy the use of ultrasonic cleaning, as it's perfect for cleaning all the small parts and tools that go hand in hand with most hobbies.
There are truly an almost infinite number of things that can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.
There are, however, some very important exceptions.
Ultrasonic transmission can be extremely powerful, and certain objects and materials will actually be harmed by it.
Some examples are pearls, turquoise, and other soft gemstones.
Ultrasonics can also strip coatings off of things such as glasses lenses.
It's very important to make sure your application fits with ultrasonics.
Another issue many people have with ultrasonics is that it won't remove tarnish.
What these people fail to realize is that all ultrasonics do is scrub, and that tarnish is actually a chemical reaction, and not dirt.
To clean tarnish, a special made tarnish remover is required.
The silver itself however can still certainly be cleaned of debris in an ultrasonic cleaner.
