    • 1). Check the length of your Ethernet cable and position your router within range of your DSL modem. Connect the cable between the Internet port on the router and the Ethernet port on the DSL modem.

    • 2). Put the router's setup disc in your computer's optical drive and follow the instructions on the screen to install the router's software. Type a name for your wireless network when prompted or use the default of the router's name.

    • 3). Open the Windows Vista "Start" menu and click the "Connect To" button. Click the name you chose for the network or click the name of the router if you didn't choose your own name, then choose "Connect."

    • 4). Navigate to the ZoneAlarm website and download the installation file, if you haven't already (see Resources). Double-click the installation file and follow the installation prompts on the screen.

    • 5). Open the ZoneAlarm program after the installation finishes. Click the "Firewall" button at the left end of the window.

    • 6). Click the "Internet Zone" slider bar and drag it to "High" to prevent any other computers from seeing your computer. Drag it to "Medium" instead to allow other computers on the network to interact with your computer.

    • 7). Select the "Program Control" link at the left end of the window and navigate to the "Programs" tab. Scroll through the list of programs and locate any program you need to allow through the ZoneAlarm firewall.

    • 8). Double-click the program and choose the green "Allow" check mark. Select the red "Deny" option instead if you want to prevent the program from connecting to the Internet or sending information to other computers.

    • 9). Access any other computer that needs to connect to the DSL modem through the router. Repeat the process of connecting to the network through the "Connect To" window and installing and configuring ZoneAlarm.
