How to Request a Credit Report From a Lender
- 1). Determine whether you actually want a loan. You do not necessarily need to want the loan to apply for the loan. However, if you do want the loan, make sure to do research and find an appropriate lender. Banks and credit unions often have the best rates.
- 2). Apply for a loan. You only need to apply at one lender. Regardless of the credit decision, you'll be able to get a copy of your credit report.
- 3). Wait for the credit decision. Depending on the type of loan you requested, it may take from a few minutes (like a personal loan with a low loan amount) or a few weeks (like a mortgage). To expedite the process, request a personal loan.
- 4). Visit the office where you applied for the loan. Regardless of the credit decision, ask the lender about the credit report used to render the credit decision. The lender must file the request for a copy. Being there in person will help speed the process as the loan officer will likely fill out the request in front of you.
- 5). Wait. It may take as long as four weeks to receive the credit report in the mail. If you're confused about any aspect of the report, take it back to the loan officer so he or she can help you decipher it.
