How to Do a Sperm Count
- 1). Make an appointment with a reproductive specialist. Request a semen analysis test to determine your sperm count.
- 2). Masterbate in order to collect a semen sample for your doctor. He will ask you to ejaculate into a special container. You will need to hand over a few samples because measurements tend to vary between samples.
- 3). Expect medical experts to examine your semen under a microscope. They will perform the sperm count by determining how many sperm are within squares on a grid pattern. Some experts may also use a computer to do a sperm count.
- 4). Understand that a more involved test may be used if there are no sperm visible in the sample. He will isolate and examine any sperm he finds to determine their health.
- 5). Get the results of the sperm count, measured per milliliter. Normal densities range from 20 million to more than 100 million. As the number of sperm decreases, the chance of getting a partner pregnant drops as well.
- 6). Know that, according to the Mayo Clinic, less than half of the men with 12.5 to 25 million sperm per milliliter have a chance of impregnating their partner. If your sperm count is less than 12.5 million per milliliter, the odds get slimmer at about one-quarter of successful pregnancies.
