How to Tile a Vertical Crack on a Concrete Floor
- 1). Clean the concrete floor thoroughly with soap, water and a mop before tiling. Allow the floor to dry for at least 24 hours so no moisture is trapped under the tiles.
- 2). Inspect the crack you want to tile over. Small cracks won't be a problem, but cracks wider than about 1/16 inch should be fixed with a concrete patch before tiling to prevent any further spread. Vacuum the crack out, then push the concrete patch compound into the crack and let it dry according to the directions.
- 3). Lay an anti-fracture membrane down over the area where the crack is. This fabric covering will prevent any movement of the crack from disturbing the tile above it.
- 4). Scoop up some tile adhesive with a notched trowel and slowly and carefully apply it over the area where the crack is just like you would for tiling over the rest of the floor. The trick here is to be careful not to disturb the membrane as you apply the adhesive over it, so just be gentle.
