Home Remedies for Dogs With Grass Allergies
- 1). Keep your dog indoors whenever possible. One of the simplest ways to provide your dog relief from a grass allergy is to limit his contact to the allergen. This is especially true when the lawn is being mowed or pollen counts are high. Your dog's allergy will be exasperated during these times.
- 2). Keep the lawn mowed short. The longer the grass the more pollens your dog is likely to encounter.

- 4). Bathe your dog in cool water. The water will have a cooling effect when her skin is especially irritated. If you take your dog for a walk and you see that she is scratching a lot when you get home, a bath will provide some instant relief. Use an itch-relief pet shampoo. This will also help to reduce discomfort. Be sure to thoroughly rinse your dog after washing. Leaving soap residue on her skin can further irritate her causing more itching.
- 5). Provide your dog with an antihistamine when necessary. Benadryl is a common over-the-counter antihistamine that is safe for dogs. For specific dosing for your pet, contact your vet. The antihistamine will help relieve itching.
- 6). Give the dog fatty acids. Look for pet-safe supplements available at your local pet store or at a holistic veterinarian's office. You want to offer a supplement that contains omega-3 fatty acids which are usually made from fish oils. It may take up to several months for improvements to be seen from the supplements. Speak to your vet about the benefits for your dog's specific situation and recommended dosing.
- 7). Provide your pet with an oral medications prescribed by your vet. Do not discontinue use, even if improvement is seen, without talking to your pet's vet first. Your vet may prescribe antibiotics or steroids to treat the allergy.
