How to Level a House Trailer
- 1). Remove half of the skirting from both sides of the trailer home--take the skirting pieces from the midsection for easy access to the piers underneath the home. Loosen the tie-down straps so you can move either side up or down to level the trailer.
- 2). Place the level on the center beam that runs the length of the trailer home. Put the level near the closest supporting pier. Check the bubble in the level to get an accurate reading; if the liquid is centered, the pier on that side is level. Move the the opposite side of the beam on the same pier and repeat the process. If the liquid is centered, move to the next nearest pier. Repeat the entire step for each pier until you find one that is off level.
- 3). Set the 2-by-4 lumber under the center beam next to the pier you want to level. Set the bottle jack on top of the 2-by-4. Raise the bottle jack until it reaches the beam. Set the level on the pier close by and slowly raise the bottle jack until the bubble in the level is centered. This will create a space between the pier and the beam.
- 4). Place shims between the beam and the pier. Wedge the shims tightly into place by hammering them into position. Release the bottle jack and allow the beam to rest on the shims. Check the level to ensure the pier remains leveled off when the bottle jack is lowered from the beam. Put the bottle jack back into position if the pier is not level; place more shims into position until the pier is level.
- 5). Move to the next pier and repeat steps 3 and 4 if the level reveals the beam is uneven. Continue this process until all of the piers under the trailer home are level.
- 6). Remove the bottle jack and lumber. Check for loose plumbing or wiring after leveling the trailer home. Tighten the straps and replace the skirting.
