4 Tips For Properly Caring For Your Teeth

105 33
The primary job of your teeth is to chew food (and to a lesser extent, speak). If plaque sets in and isn't cleaned by your sedation dentist, it can eventually lead to tooth decay. Given enough time, the decay can start to deteriorate the structural integrity of your teeth. If that decay progresses further, it can affect the pulp, making a root canal necessary. That's why proper dental care is important; it helps to ensure you'll avoid having to cope with severe dental problems down the road.

Below, I'll give you 4 tips for taking proper care of your teeth. Initially, each of these tips will sound intuitive. However, millions of people neglect to use them and as a result, are forced to visit their sedation dentist in order to have extensive repair work performed.

#1 - Stop Rushing Your Brushing

Most people rush through their brushing as a minor inconvenience. It's understandable; we know that brushing is critical (our parents made sure we understood), but often give it little thought, even as we're doing it. But, if you brush incorrectly, you won't clean your teeth properly. Slow down and do it right.

The bristles of your toothbrush should be positioned at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. Maintain that angle and use a circular motion on the outside face of each tooth, then move to the inside. Next, lightly scrub the chewing surface of your teeth, letting the bristles remove food particles. The entire process only takes 2 or 3 minutes.

#2 - Floss Each Day

Flossing is necessary. The fact is, the bristles of your toothbrush are limited; there are places that they can't reach. Floss is needed in order to remove food particles and plaque from those areas. Your sedation dentist will most likely recommend that you floss at least once each day. Do it gently so you won't irritate the gum line.

#3 - Eat Right To Avoid Tooth Decay

A lot of people were raised to believe that eating foods with a high sugar content could destroy your teeth. It's not quite that simple. Sugar, in and of itself, won't cause tooth decay. Instead, decay happens when those sugars (starches, too) remain on the teeth for a long period of time. That causes the bacteria already in your mouth to produce acids that begin to deteriorate tooth enamel. Before long, cavities emerge. If the cavities aren't cleaned out, the problem can worsen until a root canal is necessary by your sedation dentist.

Of course, you can avoid the problem by sticking to a diet that is consistent with the recommendations of nutritional experts. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other natural snacks improve dental health.

#4 - Have Dental Problems Fixed Quickly

If you develop cavities or other dental problems, you should make an appointment with your sedation dentist as soon as possible. He can take x-rays of your mouth to identify tooth decay, even in its beginning stages. Then, he'll suggest a plan to resolve the issues. The key is to avoid waiting to have these problems fixed. If you notice any uncharacteristic discoloration, heightened tooth sensitivity, or pain, make an appointment. The more quickly your sedation dentist can identify the problem, the more easily he can fix it.

Visiting Your Sedation Dentist

Visiting your dentist is never entirely pleasant, even for a routine cleaning. Oddly, it's usually not the pain or discomfort of having work done that makes people feel uneasy. Most of the time, procedures can be performed without any discomfort at all. Instead, for some people, the fear and anxiety is enough to keep them away, even at the cost of their dental health.

If you experience issues with your teeth despite proper brushing, flossing, and eating right, visit your sedation dentist. He can offer I.V. sedation to provide a relaxing, comfortable environment in which to have work performed pain-free. Plus, for certain complicated procedures (for example, treating gum disease), a laser dentist can address the issue by using the latest techniques in laser therapy. Your options may be more flexible than you imagine.
