How to Protect Tweeters

    • 1). Remove the car battery's negative terminal to cut off power going to your electrical system.

    • 2). Remove the speaker wire from your woofer's terminal and disconnect your tweeter from the woofer if necessary. The crossover cable will connect to your woofer, terminal and power source, such as head unit or amplifier. This step can vary because the speaker wire connected to the woofer may be connected via a harness. If so, you must cut away the harness and strip 3/8 inch off the end of the speaker wire to reveal the positive and negative strands. These strands connect to the crossover cable.

    • 3). Solder the crossover cable's input wire, the wire that connects to the head unit or amp, to the speaker wire running to the power source. Be sure to solder the negative lead to negative and positive lead to positive. At this point, the crossover cable, which has a body and three wires, should only be connected to the power source.

    • 4). Connect the low frequency wire stemming from the crossover body to the speaker wire terminal on the back of the woofer. There are a few ways to do this, such as connecting the wire to a harness that is secured to the woofer or attaching a faston connector to the low frequency wire to slide onto the terminal. Whatever the case, be sure to match polarities to prevent ruining the woofer, which entails matching positive to positive and negative to negative. By the end of this step, only one wire will remain hanging lose from the crossover body.

    • 5). Connect the high-frequency wire stemming from the crossover body to the speaker wire terminal on the back of the tweeter. The easiest way to do this is by crimping a faston connector to the high frequency lead and sliding the faston connector onto the tweeter's terminal.
