How to Choose Carpet
- 1). Educate yourself on the fibers and construction of carpet. The life of the carpet depends on choosing the proper fibers that are suitable for the area it is used in. To select a color is important, but to understand the quality will allow you to make a wise choice.
- 2). Visit a reputable carpet store or home builders center to help you make a decision. Bring with you samples of swatches from drapes, paint chips or a throw pillow, to coordinate with the room that will be carpeted. The store will allow you to take the selected carpet samples home to see it in the actual light of the room concerned.
- 3). Get samples and manufacturer information concerning the construction, fibers used, durability and guarantee of a variety of types of carpets. Various styles, such as plush pile, cut pile, cut and loop or Berber, will effect the appearance, as well as durability of the carpet.
- 4). Know that carpets are made of a variety of fibers such as nylon, olefin, polyester and wool. Nylon, known for its ability to stand up to traffic, is easy to clean, while olefin is water and spill resistant, but not as durable. Polyester is most often used in a low traffic area, such as a bedroom, while wool is moisture resistant, flame and fire resistant, durable, but very expensive.
- 5). Select a carpet according to your budget, but keep in mind the quality of a long lasting carpet, may prove to be cost effective. To prevent replacing the carpet in two or three years, you will realize the investment in quality will be worth the extra money spent.
