Who is More At Risk For Asthma? According to the latest studies, African Americans seem to lead the pack when it comes to emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and deaths due to asthma than do Caucasians.
The rate of emergency room visits is 380% higher, the hospitalization rate is 225% higher, and the death rate is nearly 200% higher.
Approximately 2 million Hispanics in the United States suffer with asthma and Puerto Ricans seem to be disproportionately impacted.
It appears that the rate of asthma among Puerto Ricans is nearly 80% higher than in non-Hispanic whites.
Cost Associated With Asthma According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the annual costs for healthcare and lost productivity due to asthma are estimated to be at 16 billion dollars.
