Errors of Interpretation - Errors Related to Meaning and Perception

103 7
Errors of Interpretation is one of the tools used by Apologists in their role as defender of truth.
One category under errors of interpretation is errors related to meaning and perception.
To thoroughly understand a particular statement, one must take into consideration the absolute meaning and the contextual meaning.
These are considered by the style of language and the social, historical and cultural background of the message.
If these points are not taken into consideration then errors of interpretation would occur.
Some of these include:
  1. Ignorance About the Nature of the Passage.
One must consider the nature of a passage in order to fully grasp the meaning.
For example, the Ten Commandments are positive laws even though the wording may be negative.
  2. Understanding the Keys.
Certain passages have keys in order for them to be properly understood.
Combination of the absolute and contextual meaning help to form the correct key.
When the wrong keys are used this leads to a misrepresentation of the passage.
  3. Human Limitations.
As humans we all have shortcomings and these shortcomings can lead us into interpreting passages incorrectly.
For example, a parent might be able to understand the need for God's discipline better than someone who has no children and parental skills.
Also there are things of the divine nature that man will never fully understand, and those who try to find an answer will more than likely find erroneous ones.
God himself has told us that His ways and thoughts are higher than ours.
It is difficult for us to understand why or how God does things.
We fail to realize that God sees what we cannot and knows what is in our hearts and minds.
Because of this lack of understanding on our part, we draw false conclusions about God.
We may find Him unjust or unfair.
  4. Words of Multiple Meanings.
Many words have different meanings and in order to avoid falsely interpreting a passage we must first understand the content it was written.
  5. The Enigmatic Characteristics of Doctrines.
In order for certain doctrines to be understood one must have the Holy Spirit in him.
Doctrines were not meant for the unbeliever but for one who has made a commitment to serve God.
Even the born again must be disciplined in his Christian life to understand these things.
If not, errors of interpretation will be the result.
  6. Linguistic Limitations.
When describing the things of God, words are quite limited.
For example certain words that were used in Hebrew, may not have an appropriate word in English to identify with.
Therefore inappropriate words may have been used in translation which would be misleading and not bring out the full meaning of the text.
These are just some of the ways interpretation errors are made and once these are understood, it is one step closer to better understanding the bible.
