Top 10 Billboard Rock Songs - September 17, 2011
This week's Billboard Rock Songs chart features no new songs in the Top 10. On our countdown, the track that took the biggest plunge is a former No. 1 sensation, and our highest climber comes from a band whose hugest hits were more than 10 years ago. Interesting thing that connects the two groups: They both were heavily influenced by Nirvana. OK, enough hints and teasing ... let's start counting 'em down.
"Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" got as high as No. 5, but it's looking like the Coldplay anthem won't last on our chart much longer. For the second week in a row, it's at No. 10.Buy from Amazon »
Back in early March, "Rope" went straight to No. 1, an impressive, rare feat. This week might be its final one in the Top 10, though: The Foo Fighters hit falls three spots to No. 9. But keep an ear out for "Arlandria," the band's next single. Blink-182 don't seem to be in any rush to barnstorm the top of the charts. "Up All Night" debuted in the Top 10 almost a month ago, and thus far they've only gotten as high as No. 8. Seether's first single off Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray has been on our countdown for five months, which is even more impressive when you consider that it never hit No. 1. (It was stuck at No. 2 instead thanks to "Rope.") And although it's losing steam in the Top 10, it stays at No. 7 for a second straight week.Buy from Amazon »
"Lowlife" is moving in the wrong direction on our chart. After two weeks at No. 4, the Theory of a Deadman smash loses altitude, dropping two spots to No. 6.Buy from Amazon »
Staind hang tough at No. 5 for a second straight week. "Not Again" is the first single off Staind, and it's pretty indicative of the album as a whole, finding the band turning up the aggression at the expense of the ballads they've parlayed into hit singles in recent years. And if "Not Again" continues to show legs on the Rock Songs chart, I have a feeling a couple other Staind tracks could do the same.Buy from Amazon »
This week's higher climbers are Bush. Last week, "The Sound of Winter" rocketed into the Top 10, landing at No. 8. For their next trick, they jump up four spots to No. 4. Not bad for Gavin Rossdale, who for the last decade has been more famous as the husband of No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani than as the leader of a once-popular alt-rock outfit. Foster the People are apparently going to need to get more pumped up if they're going to get higher than No. 3 on our chart. For a sixth straight week, "Pumped Up Kicks" takes home the bronze medal. On the Alternative Songs chart, "Walk" is the new No. 1 this week. Unfortunately for Foo Fighters, they don't duplicate that feat on the Rock Songs chart. This is the seventh week in a row that the Wasting Light single has to be content with sitting at No. 2. For a seventh straight week, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" sits pretty at No. 1. Unfortunately, I'm With You, Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album, failed to become the band's second in a row to hit No. 1. In its first week, I'm With You had to settle for No. 2, bested by Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV.
