How to Install Home Solar Panels
- 1). Locate your roof studs using an electronic stud finder or by measuring every 16 inches from the end of the roof. Stud rafters are installed every 16 inches in most homes. Determine where to locate the brackets on the rafters and make a mark in this location with chalk.
- 2). Place the brackets on the rafters in a straight line across the roof using a chalk line or laser sight to keep them perfectly aligned. After the brackets are in place, using a pilot bit and power drill, drill a small pilot hole into the rafters using the bracket itself as a guide.
- 3). Attach each bracket with steel screws and a power drill to the roof rafter. Apply roofing tar or caulking around the brackets to prevent leaks.
- 4). Secure the mounting section of the bracket to the base bracket with stainless steel or galvanized bolts. Your mounting kit may contain these.
- 5). Secure the solar panel to the brackets by snapping them into place and then securing the panel's mounting hardware to the bracket. Connect each solar panel using metal screws or bolts.
- 6). Connect the solar panel cables to the electrical inverter.
