Knitting Signature Works With Cable Knitting

101 257
Whether you have been knitting for years or you are just beginning, chances are that you have veered away from one of your knitting patterns at some stage of the game. Patterns are much like recipes to the extent that you can be certain that they will work if you follow the directions exactly. Still, everybody has different tastes and like a recipe, a knitting pattern can be doctored up a little bit to entertain personal tastes or preferences.

While there are many different ways to add your very own personal touch to your knitted garments, one of the most popular methods involves the use of cable knitting. Cable knitting is performed with a double pointed needle and while it may be a bit complex at first, can give you all of the tools you ever wanted to doctor up your knitted garments and give them all your personal touch. The two most common types of cable needles are a straight, double-pointed needle and one with a bowl-shaped (convex) curve in the middle.

Cable stitching is generally done to create ornate patterns on the right side of your knitted garments. Some of the more common patterns are cables, braids, lattice, rope, honeycombs, what is commonly referred to as something bearing a strong resemblance to a horseshoe crab and even for the numerous branches of a tree should you choose to make really ornate bobbles for your knitted garments. Cable knitting is frequently used to embellish the cuffs, collars and other openings on knitted garments.

If you are going to be using the cable knitting for the openings though, you need to keep in mind that the stitches made on the cable knitting needles are generally going to be much smaller and less elastic than the larger yarn and the larger knit of the average outer garment. If you are using the cable knitting for garments that need to have a reasonable amount of elasticity such as cuffs, hats or other openings you may want to do some testing before you apply the embellishments to your finished work.

The most common and popular type of knitting stitch for the cable knitting is the standard stocking stitch. To create the cable knitting, the stitches to be crossed to the wrong side of the garment are transferred to the cable knitting needle and held in place while the regular stitches for the right side of the garment are knitted together. When the "front" row is done, the cable stitches are passed back through to the right side and transferred back to the normal knitting needle to be integrated into the garment.

Cable knitting may not be the best way to start and it will take you some practice to get used to but it can help you to create some truly beautiful and wholly custom knitted garments for personal use or for your professional knitting portfolio. As you get better with the cable stitching you will be truly amazed at some of the beautiful results that you can get. If ever you do begin knitting for profit, you can rest assured that this will also place an added value on all of your knitted garments and other crafts.
