How to Add Moisture to a Room With a Humidifier
- 1). Look for a location in the room that is at waist level and does not have anything directly above it, such as a cabinet.
- 2). Open the top of the humidifier and fill the water reservoir with distilled water, using the amount specified by the appliance manufacture. Plug the humidifier in and turn it on. Adjust the output level, which controls the amount of air moisture, to the desired level. The optimal level is around 30 percent, but can be higher as long as it does not exceed 50 percent.
- 3). Leave the humidifier on until the air feels comfortable, then turn it off. Some humidifiers have an automatic function which turns off when the proper humidity level is achieved, and turns it back on once it lowers again.
- 4). Empty the humidifier daily by opening the water reservoir and emptying out any remaining water. Wipe all moisture off the appliance with a clean cloth. Refill the tank with clean, distilled water only when you are ready to reuse the humidifier.
- 5). Clean the humidifier thoroughly every three days by emptying the water and scrubbing all interior surfaces with a clean soft-bristled brush and a 3-percent solution of hydrogen peroxide. Rinse with clean water and wipe all surfaces dry with a towel.
