How to Obtain Previous Tax Returns

    • 1). Visit the official website or office of your paid tax preparer if you used a tax service. Tax services keep a copy of your return on record. Request a copy of the tax returns you need. A fee may apply, depending on the preparer or website.

    • 2). Visit the official website of the IRS. Get Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return. Print out the form. Contact the IRS to have the form mailed to your home if you are unable to print the document.

    • 3). Fill out Form 4506 in full. A maximum of 8 years of returns can be requested on the same form. Multiply the number of returns you need by $57.00 to determine your fee. Include a check or money order made payable to the "United States Treasury" for the total due or the IRS will deny the request. Write your Social Security number and the words "Form 4506 request" on your payment method.

    • 4). Check the instructions attached to Form 4506 for the mailing address. Mail the completed form with your payment to the address listed for your state of residence when the return was filed. The IRS will mail the copy of your return to your current address as entered on the top of Form 4506.

    • 5). Visit the official website of the state revenue or tax office you sent your state tax return to. Look for the form required to receive copies of prior years returns and note any fees. Fill out the form in full and send in any payment requested to receive a copy of your state return.
