    Asphalt

    • Asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors and styles to allow you to customize the look and coordinate it with the exterior of your home. You have the option of the traditional three-tab that looks like three different singles on one strip or architectural or dimensional shingles that look textured. The type of backing also differentiates asphalt shingles. Fiberglass backing gives the shingles a higher fire rating and is more durable. The other option is a backing made of wood chips, recycled cardboard and other organic products. They have a lower fire rating but stand up better to cold temperatures and wind. This style of roofing typically has the lowest price tag, with the specific cost depending on style and quality.

    Slate

    • Pieces of slate cut to look like shingles offer a roofing option. Slate requires little maintenance and holds up well against fire and rot. It also lasts a long time. Slate tile doesn't give you as many color options, but it looks more natural than asphalt shingles. Drawbacks include the weight, cost and the breakable nature of the material. Even walking on the slate may cause it to break.

    Clay

    • Clay roof tiles add a southwest flair, but it also works with other home styles. Like slate, clay tiles have a long lifespan and resist fire, rot and insects. It also doesn't need a lot of maintenance. The drawbacks of clay roofing are also similar to slate. They are heavy and may break if you walk on them. Fading is a possibility, and installation is often more difficult.

    Metal

    • Metal roofing is often used on commercial buildings, but it is also available for homes. Material options include copper, steel, aluminum and alloy. Panels with vertical lines at the joints are an option. You can also get metal roofing to look like other roofing styles, such as shingles, wood shakes and tiles. The benefits of metal include its durability, low maintenance and fire protection. You get less heat transfer into the home since the metal reflects it. You will pay more for a metal roof, and a professional installation is usually necessary.

    Wood

    • Wood roofing offers a distinct look because of its natural material and variation. It creates an insulation effect for the attic while promoting air circulation. A wood roof comes with several drawbacks to consider. It requires more maintenance and is more susceptible to damage, rot, mold and fire. The quality of the wood pieces affects the overall durability and look of the roof. Professional installation is key to get the best look.
