How to Drill a Hole in Porcelain Tile
- 1). Mark the spot on the wall where you want to drill using a pencil or marker. Make sure you know the size of the diamond drill bit you need for your project. Diamond core drill bits come in standard sizes just like other masonry bits, such as 1/8 inch and one inch.
- 2). Begin drilling at a low speed, holding the drill firmly against the wall in a perfectly perpendicular angle. If you can't sustain this position for about thirty seconds, the approximate time it'll take to get through your tile, use a drill guide, or just take breaks.
- 3). Hold a wet sponge over the drill and squeeze a bit of water onto the drill bit and hole. This is a very important part of drilling into tile, because it prevents your bit from overheating and glazing over, which diminishes it's cutting ability. The less sharp the core of the bit, the more likely it is to wander in the hole or crack the tile.
