Pubic Hair Folliculitis

104 14

    Causes

    • Folliculitis happens when friction from clothes or shaving damages the hair follicles that lie just below the skin. The damaged follicles can become infected and get swollen and painful. The most common cause of folliculitis is shaving, and it is sometimes called razor burn and barber's itch.

    Symptoms

    • Folliculitis causes a rash in the groin and genital area. Pimples and pustules may also develop, and the pimples may crust over. The entire affected area will itch.

    Treatment

    • A towel soaked in hot water pressed against the affected area may help to drain the swollen follicles. Antibiotics may need to be applied to the area or taken in pill form in order to completely get rid of the infection. Pubic hair folliculitis usually responds well to treatment, but can easily recur.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The easiest way to prevent pubic hair folliculitis is to avoid wearing clothing that rubs too much against the affected area. It is also important, if the folliculitis is caused by shaving, to either shave with a fresh razor every time or to use an electric razor. Keep the area clean, and make sure to wash any clothing that was worn during the infection as it may be contaminated and cause another bout of the condition.

    Warning

    • It is important to remember that despite the fact that folliculitis is caused by irritation and clogging of the hair follicles, the condition itself is actually an infection. If it is not dealt with quickly, there is a risk that the infection will spread and the infected area will grow.
