Anyone with a sense of pride in and love for his country may be considered patriotic, states the USA Today newspaper. Patriotism takes many forms, including showing off that national respect through crafts. If you want to express your love of the United States, you’ll find a variety of quick projects to show you truly bleed red (and white and blue). - A patriotic craft that will really soar heads and tails above the others is a wood eagle kite. Handmade kites work just as well as store-bought ones, but require very few supplies. The base of the kite is where the wood comes in; you’ll need two thin slats of about equal size to form the backbone of the kite and protect it against the wind. Use a piece of construction paper or poster board to draw a proud American eagle, the national symbol. For additional patriotic flair, glue red, white and blue crepe paper to the eagle’s bottom, as if they are long feathers floating out behind him. Attach the eagle to the wood slats with super glue and glue string or cord all around the frame of the kite, leaving a long length of cord free to use to go fly the kite.
- A simple square or rectangle-shaped thin piece of wood can serve as the base for a decorative and wearable patriotic craft. You’ll need a pin-back, super glue, paint brushes, mini gold or silver stars and red, white and blue paint to make a custom American flag badge. Because white is your lightest color, paint the entire piece of wood white first, then add the red stripes. Create the blue box in the top left corner, then when dry, add as many mini stars as will fit (though you won’t get near 50 in there unless it is a very big badge). Use super glue to attach the pin-back to the back of the badge. For extra flair, dab a dot of glue in the middle of each star, then shake a canister of glitter over the badge. Let dry, then shake the badge to free any loose glitter.
- Let patriotic revelers know your house is the place to party after the fireworks with a wood door sign craft. There are a wide variety of options for a patriotic door decorator; you’ll find wood cutouts in the shape of a rectangle (perfect for a flag), an eagle, stars and hearts (to show how much you love your country) in craft stores, along with plenty of red, white and blue paint. If you’re feeling more crafty, you can sketch your own designs and cut them out of thin, flat wood slats with a box cutter. Add picture hangers to the back of your decoration with wood glue or, where applicable, loop a length of American flag-patterned ribbon around the door hanger and secure to the door knob. To further personalize your craft, use a black or glitter marker to write a slogan on the welcome sign, such as “We Love America,” “Support the Troops,” “Home of the Free” or “Welcome to Our Star Spangled Home.”
