How to Get Dust Out of a Polyurethane Finish
- 1). Fold a sheet of sandpaper inward so that the paper back of the sandpaper is facing out. Rub the polyurethane with the paper side of the sandpaper, moving with the grain of the wood. The paper will smooth and remove dust particles from the surface of the polyurethane.
- 2). Change to fine-grit steel wool if the paper did not remove all the dust particles. Rub the polyurethane with the steel wool. Rub lightly with the grain. Move in short strokes, 4 inches forward, 3 inches back. Check the feel of the polyurethane with your fingers where you have rubbed. If consistently smooth, move to another section until the surface of the polyurethane is dust-free.
- 3). Scoop out a marble-sized gob of paste wax onto your fingers wrapped in a cotton cloth. Rub the wax into the surface of the polyurethane, using short strokes, until you have a light coat of wax over the entire surface of the polyurethane. Wait 4 hours for the wax to dry.
- 4). Hand rub the polyurethane with a soft, dry cloth. Polish hard until the wax is gone and the polyurethane has a smooth, dust-free finish.
