How to Apply for a Lost Auto Title

    • 1). Locate the vehicle identification number. The 17-digit VIN on most cars is located on a metal plate on the driver's side of the dashboard in the corner near the windshield. It may also be on the interior driver's side panel or on the engine. The VIN is also on the car's registration and insurance card. You will be required to supply the VIN with the application for a new title. The VIN also allows you to search the history of the car if you are purchasing a used car.

    • 2). Do an online VIN search. See the Resources link below. A VIN search will tell you if the car is stolen, if it has a valid title or if it is listed as junked or salvaged.

    • 3). Apply for a title replacement application at the Department of Motor Vehicles from the state that issued the original title. Application forms may be downloaded online at the DMV websites or obtained by visiting the local DMV.

    • 4). Fill out the application. Write in the VIN and the odometer reading. The application signature has to be written and signed by a notary public and accompanied by a photo ID.

    • 5). Follow the instructions concerning the obligations to the lien holder. The duplicate title is sent to the lien holder of the original title. Each state has rules concerning the lien holder and the transfer of a title. Some states require that the lien holder's signature be witnessed and signed by a notary public.

    • 6). Submit the application for a duplicate title with the application fee. The application fee should be a check or money order. The process may take as long as 10 weeks to receive the duplicate title.
