How to Limit Dust in a Home
- 1). Vacuum your home twice a week. Pay particular attention to the edges of carpets, behind furniture and under beds. Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum to clean upholstery, curtains, mattresses, shelves and skirting boards around the walls of your rooms.
- 2). Clean, and wash if appropriate, your vacuum filters regularly to ensure they function correctly and trap any dirt and dust that is suctioned into the machine.
- 3). Shake and beat removable rugs and cushions outside the house. This removes any dust and loose fibers.
- 4). Mix 2 tbsp. of dishwashing detergent and 6 tbsp. of white vinegar into a bucket of warm water. Thoroughly mop hard floors to remove any dust. Use the same solution to clean ceramic tiles and sanitary fittings.
- 5). Dampen a soft cleaning cloth with a little water and use it to dust shelves, cupboards and other surfaces around the house. Regularly rinse it in clean, warm water and wring it out until only slightly damp. This ensures that any dust is trapped and not simply moved around.
- 6). Reduce the amount of clutter and ornaments around the house. These items easily attract dust and prevent the proper cleaning of household surfaces. Select a few special items and pack the remainder into boxes for storage. Rotate the ornaments on display with those in store to alter the look of your room on a regular basis.
- 7). Store books, CDs and DVDs in cupboards if possible. Shelves attract dust and these items are both difficult to clean and harbor dirt in and between their cases.
- 8). Keep closet floors free so that they can be vacuumed easily. Place any rarely used clothing or items in boxes or bags to avoid dust.
- 9). Wash and rotate bedding weekly. Dead skin cells are an important component of dust and regular removal will mean less is created. Carefully roll used bedding rather than shaking it to transfer any loose particles to the washing machine and not spread across the bedroom.

Keep pets outdoors, if possible. If you allow them in your house, ensure they do not go into the bedroom where their fur will create unwanted dust. Wash pets regularly to remove dead skin flakes and loose hair.
