How to Do Chinese Knot Work
- 1). Poke four holes in the paper using a hole punch. Measure 1 1/4 inch from the center of the left edge of the square and poke a hole. Repeat with the other three edges.
- 2). Fold the string in half to make a loop at the top. Pull the loop up through the top hole of the paper from the back to the front. Pull until the loop is 3 inches. The two ends will dangle down from the back of the paper.
- 3). Make a loop with the left end and pull it up through the left hole so you have a 3-inch loop. Repeat with the right end and the right hole. The two ends will dangle from the back of the paper. Pull the two ends up through the last hole. The top loop becomes string 1, the left loop becomes string 2, the two ends become string 3 and the right loop becomes string 4.
- 4). Fold string 1 over string 2 so that it points straight down. Fold string 2 over string 1 and string 3 so it points to the right. Fold string 3 over string 2 and string 4 so it points up. Fold string 4 over string 3 and under string 1.
- 5). Tug lightly on each of the strings to tighten them in the middle of the paper. The two ends now point up and become string 1. The new left loop becomes string 2, the new bottom loop becomes string 3 and the right loop becomes string 4. The position of the numbers remains the same, but the strings are different.
- 6). Fold string 1 over string 4 so it points down. Fold string 4 over string 1 and string 3 so it points to the left. Fold string 3 over string 4 and string 2 so that it points up. Fold string 2 over string 3 and under string 1. Tug the ends to tighten the strings.
- 7). Cut the paper from the knot with the scissors.
