St. Patrick's Day Cooking for Children

    Gelatin Rainbow

    • A common image when you think of St. Patrick's Day is a leprechaun's gold, hidden at the end of a rainbow. You can make your own rainbow out of gelatin and have your kids help you. Follow the package directions to create six small boxes of flavored gelatin jigglers. Jigglers are more firm than the traditional recipe and easier to cut. You will need red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. You can choose any flavors that fit this color combination. Make each flavor in its own small bowl or shallow buttered pan. Once the gelatin is set, cut it into cubes using a knife. Transfer the cubes onto a serving platter and allow your child to arrange them in a rainbow shape. To make clouds, squirt some whipped cream at the base of the rainbow at either side. You can sprinkle a handful of gold foil chocolate coins around the serving platter for an added effect of the leprechaun gold.

    Leprechaun Potatoes

    • Because most children won't be interested in corned beef and cabbage, you can make your own festive treat for your kids that they will love. Follow the directions on a box of instant mash potatoes to create enough servings for your family. After mixing them and adding any additional butter, salt or pepper that you enjoy for your potatoes, add a few drops of green food coloring. The amount is up to you. If you want a more vibrant green, add more, but remember that food coloring will stain, and the more you add, the more staining you will have in your mouth. Mix the food coloring into the potatoes before serving them to your children.

    Shamrock Milkshakes

    • If you are looking for a cool substitute for green beer that you can give your children, a shamrock milkshake might just do the trick. Place four cups of milk, one large package of pistachio pudding mix, and four scoops of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt into a blender. Turn the blender on to your preferred milkshake making setting and allow all the ingredients to mix. When it is done, pour the milkshake into cups. Add a little whipped cream on top. Then, sprinkle green sugar on top to garnish.
