How to Fertilize New Silver Maple

104 13
    • 1). Fertilize silver maple saplings when they are first planted, using two packets of 19-5-17 slow-release fertilizer. Insert the packets into the planting hole when you transplant the sapling. Water the sapling thoroughly after planting.

    • 2). Apply a tree fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and phosphorus in springtime, when new growth is forming. Nitrogen encourages leaf growth, while phosphorus encourages root growth. Continue to apply this fertilizer for the second and third year if the soil is lacking in nutrients or the tree isn't growing sufficiently.

    • 3). Mulch saplings with an organic mulch such as compost or wood chips. Apply the mulch 3 inches thick and 2 inches from the trunk. Reapply mulch as it starts to decompose. Mulch retards weed growth, conserves moisture and fertilizes the soil.
