Can You Run Programs Meant for Windows 95 on Windows Vista?

    Compatibility Mode

    • Compatibility Mode comes built-in to Windows Vista and allows users to change the way programs run to simulate older Windows OSes. To access this feature, right click on an application's shortcut and select "Properties." Open the "Compatibility" tab and select "Windows 95" in the Compatibility Mode drop down menu. This tab also has options for running the program with a limited color scheme or without visual themes that may help older software run better.

    Problems

    • While Compatibility Mode can solve a large number of errors with older programs, some applications may continue to malfunction in Vista. Complex software such as video rendering programs or graphically intensive games often have specific requirements for hardware drivers that don't include Vista's far-reaching backward-compatibility. Review the requirements of the specific program for details. You may need to roll back a system driver or find an alternative source in order to repair functionality.

    Virtual Machines

    • In the event that Compatibility Mode does not allow a Windows 95 program to run correctly, Windows Vista can run a Windows 95 virtual machine to ensure proper function. A virtual machine completely duplicates a Windows 95 system in software, which runs in parallel with the Vista platform. Microsoft offers the Virtual PC 2007 software for running older Windows platforms, which downloads for free from the Microsoft website. Installing Windows 95 requires a valid installation CD.
