How to Join Carpet at Doorways
- 1). Roll out the carpet along the room.
- 2). Cut the carpet so that it fits through the doorway.
- 3). Stretch the carpet using a knee kicker throughout the room. Hit the carpet with a hammer onto the tack strips running along the walls to secure it.
- 4). Stretch the carpet towards the doorway.
- 5). Cut the excess carpet meeting in the middle of the doorway using a cushion-back carpet cutter. Remove the excess carpet.
- 6). Apply a latex seam sealer along the edge of the backing of the carpet. Push the sealer into the raw, cut edge of the carpet backing using the tip of the sealer application, without letting the sealer touch the carpet on top of the backing. Allow the sealer to dry.
- 7). Cut a piece of carpet seam tape that fits between the width of the doorway.
- 8). Slide the seam tape underneath the carpet with half under one side and half under the other side.
- 9). Press a hot iron onto the carpet for about 10 seconds to activate the glue of the seam tape. The seam will not hold if the glue is not activated with heat.
