How to Obtain a Tax Number for Your Business
- 1). Access the Internal Revenue Service website "EIN Assistant" online tool. Click "Begin Application."
- 2). Click the radio button next to the legal structure of your business. For example, if you are in business for yourself, click the "Sole Proprietor" button. You can click on the names of the various legal structures listed to get an explanation of each. Click "Continue" to advance.
- 3). Enter the business information. You will be required to enter the physical location of the business, phone number and the date your business started.
- 4). Provide details about your business. You will be required to answer questions about the function of your business and its employees.
- 5). Click the radio button next to your preference for how you would like to receive your tax number for your business. You can select either "Receive Letter Online" or "Receive Letter By Mail." If you select the online option, you can save and print the file containing your tax number immediately. If you select to receive it by mail, it may take up to 4 weeks before you receive the tax number.
- 6). Review the information you entered and click "Submit" if it is accurate. If any of the information is incorrect, you must fill out the application again. Click the "Start A New Application" link at the top of the Web page.
- 7). Save your new tax number for your business on your computer if you chose the online option. Click "Continue" to review further information about your tax number.
