How to Install Winter Tires
- 1). Put your car in a safe place and place it in park, preferably on flat ground, so it doesn't roll during installation. Install your winter tires before snow falls; when the temperature is consistently below about 40 degrees.
- 2). Remove the hubcaps.
- 3). Turn the lug nuts counter clockwise using a lug wrench.
- 4). Raise one wheel of the car with your jack after placing the jack in the correct location as indicated by your car's owner's manual.
- 5). Remove your tire and replace it with your new snow tire. Line up the new tire with the threaded shaft. Snow tires are made from special rubber compounds and have different tread designs to handle the cold and snow, so keep the same tread design for the all snow tires.
- 6). Fasten the lug nuts and bring the car to the ground before replacing the hubcaps.
- 7). Repeat these processes for the three remaining tires.
- 8). Inflate all tires and use a pressure gauge to determine when they are ready. Tires lose 1 lb. of pressure for every 5-degree drop in temperature, so it's important to check tire pressure after a heavy frost.
