There are seven tips that could improve your German skills right away.
1. Realize German grammar isn't all that important. Many school teachers kill all creativity when teachers begin discussing grammar. Even native Germans commit mistakes between "der", "die" and "das" as the article before things. A house is called "Haus" in german, but whether you say "der Haus" or "das Haus" won't matter to Germans. They understand what you mean regardless of the article.
2. Germans will appreciate that you made an effort. You may make a mistake with a word or two, but Germans won't be offended by that. Explain you are a tourist, and be creative, and you will find Germans are kind when you make the initial effort.
3. Kindness will get you the extra mile. When you enter a shop, use "guten Tag" for Hello, and "guten Abend" for good evening. You
4. Let the words flow. Much like tip number 1, the ability to be creative gets you a better grasp of the language. Even a single word won't make you lose the entire meaning.
5. Spelling is easier than most think. The whole thing lies in the mind of those who learn German. While it may be difficult for some to realize, it's a fact of life that single letters and double letters are just something you need to learn. You can't hear the difference, so it's just a case of "practice makes perfect."
6. V is pronounced as F while W is soft and pronounced as our English V. Understanding this about pronunciation is all important in catching the way you speak German.
7. CH is pronounced as an English long-R. You have the ch in "Wochenende", meaning "weekend", and this principle doesn't have any exceptions - and is therefore important to know.
When people need to learn German there is a tendency to get annoyed with rules, but once you implement these seven tips you will find that it becomes much easier to understand the language. If you have German television channels get your text tv module to cover any subtitles, and you will find you quickly pick up the meaning of words. Watch a DVD with a movie you know well in English, and you will be surprised by how well you pick up a fairly wide vocabulary. Now, you're ready to pay a visit to your friends in Germany.
