How to Connect to a Remote Desktop Through a Router
- 1). Open the "System Properties" window for the computer that you will be connecting to remotely. This can be accessed by clicking on the "Start Menu," right-clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Properties."
- 2). Go to the "Remote" tab. Make sure that the check box next to "Enable Remote Desktop on this computer" is checked.
- 3). Add any users that you want to have permission to connect to the computer remotely to the remote desktop users list. Click "OK" to save the settings and close the window.
- 4). Open "Control Panel" and go to the network adapter settings page. Set the network adapter that connects the computer to the Internet to have a static IP address, by right-clicking it and selecting properties.
- 5). Click on "Internet Protocol 4 (TCP/IP)" and select "Properties." Click the button next to "Use This Address." Use an available IP address and set the gateway and DNS to the router's IP address. Click "OK" on the open window to save.
- 6). Open your Internet browser and type in the IP address of your router. Enter the username and password for its configuration page.
- 7). Find the page for setting port forwarding/port triggering. Create a new port forwarding event for the port number 3389, which is the port used by remote desktop. Set the IP address to the same address you set for the computer.
- 8). Record the external IP address from the router. Enter this address in the remote desktop client program on a second computer. Click "Connect" and enter the user name and password for an account with permission to connect when prompted.
