Build a Shed - Some Ideas Before You Start

103 25
If you are thinking that it would be good to build your own shed there are a few things to consider before you start.
Get them wrong and your project can easily turn into a disaster.
From my own experience there are a few points you should consider before you start to build your own shed.
I tried to construct a backyard shed a few years back thinking it would be an easy project.
The first mistake was to not have a proper set of plans drawn up or even a list of the materials I would need.
Needless to say this is not the best way to go about a project like a garden shed.
In the end it would cost me a lot of time and effort and wasted money on the trial and error approach.
In the end it was a failure and had to be removed.
Not just because of the poor design but also because of infringement of local planning restrictions.
That is an expensive lesson so the first step in building your own shed is to check up on your local building codes.
If you live in a housing community there may also be special rules and regulations you must abide by so it is wise to look into that as well.
The real fact is that in order to do a proper job and have something at the end that is not only useful but good to look at, you need a proper set of shed plans.
The time saved and the trouble avoided is well worth the small cost of good planning.
When choosing a set of plans, be sure that they include a complete list of materials you will need.
This will allow you to cost the entire project and not have any hidden surprises.
Having a detailed cut chart is also vital.
This will allow you to cut and prepare all the pieces of the new garden shed before you get round to any construction.
You simply cannot do this without a proper set of plans.
Having all the pieces pre-cut and waiting means that when you do start the construction, it will be much quicker to assemble.
Do think about the location of your wooden shed.
Will you need an electrical supply to it? This will obviously depend on what you want to use it for.
Taking some time to prepare and plan will make a huge difference to the success or failure of the project and that really means wasting money when you make mistakes.
