Do you love watching live bands or music shows on TV.
Are you amazed by the keyboard players and their amazing talent to move their hands so fluently and quickly across the keyboard? Do you dream about being able to play piano or keyboard like this yourself, maybe becoming a star on the stage one day.
Are you put off though by reports that you need to study endless amounts of theory, and have to read musical score to be able to pursue your dream of being a keyboard player.
The good news is that you do not need to have to rely on theory and musical score to be a great keyboard player, some of the most loved artists of the decade play keyboard and have taught themselves or studied by ear.
In fact it sometimes can make you a better musician and performer as it allows you more freedom in your playing and can let you put your own expression into your music.
Many people learn keyboard by memory and go on to be amazing keyboard players.
They do this by listening to a song they are familiar with and then going to their keyboard and working out the melody by ear.
It is a good idea to learn songs you are very familiar with as a beginner, and then once you develop your own unique way of learning to move onto songs that you don't know quite so well.
When learning by ear, make sure you have an audio copy of the song you are trying to master.
By having this close to hand you can stop and start it and learn in sections by repeating the song until you click with the pattern and how it should sound.
People that are practical learners will benefit from learning by ear as opposed to playing from music.
Some people who have conditions such as dyslexia and aspurgers can be amazing musicians but they would play from memory and not from sheet music, and this system will work perfectly for them.
So if you have had doubts in the past about playing keyboard and were scared of having to read music, then rest assured you can often be a better keyboard player from playing by ear and developing your own methods rather than reading from a piece of sheet music.
It can take many years of practice to reach the standard to be able play your own one hour song repertoire on piano or keyboard using traditional learning methods.
