Many kids are interested in fashion design. Fashion designers create looks, clothes, shoes, jewelry, purses, belts, hats and other accessories to help people express themselves in their daily lives. Whether you are a kid interested in fashion design or a parent whose kid is a budding designer, these ideas will help you get your style vision onto the page and out into the world. - Makeup and glamour make a fashion show party extra-special.girl checking her makeup in the mirror image by Galina Barskaya from Fotolia.com
If your child has a gaggle of friends who are also interested in fashion design, you can host a fashion show party to celebrate her next birthday. Invite each child to bring a small selection of items (say three tops, three bottoms, three accessories and two pairs of shoes) with her initials taped to the tags to prevent mix-ups. Buy some nontoxic mineral makeup if you like. Clear out the living room and make a runway. With strategic positioning and perhaps some innovative arrangements with curtains, you may be able to create a "backstage" area too.
Depending upon your child's age and temperament, and those of her friends, that could be all the structure they need to stage their own fashion show. Young children and children prone to squabbling and power struggles may require more concrete guidelines. (For example, each child gets a set number of turns down the runway.)
Make a stereo and microphone available so they can use music and an announcer. If you have a camera that produces instant snapshots, use it for excellent party favors. Designate a photographer and a videographer if you also have a video camera. - Customize a thrift-store clutch with rhinestones, sew-on patches, paint or whatever else you can think of.purse image by Robert Grzywaczewski from Fotolia.com
Since few children know how to sew clothes from scratch, and, let's face it, many adults lack the skills or inclination to teach them, encourage your budding fashion designer to start by altering already-made clothes. T-shirts can be turned into skirts, skirts into dresses, skinny belts into choker necklaces ... the possibilities are as wide as your child's imagination. Don't overlook nonclothing items. With the addition of enough packing tape, a couple of cool vintage album covers can become an awesome school bag.
Make it clear which clothes your child is allowed to alter (which will probably include destructive mistakes) and which he is not. Thrift stores are a great source for budget-friendly, young-designer-friendly duds. - Custom T-shirts come in a rainbow of colors, styles and sizes.looking for a shirt image by Ramona smiers from Fotolia.com
Computer-savvy kids can, with parental assistance and permission, upload designs to websites that will print those onto T-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball shirts, mugs, messenger bags and more. For the kid who is more interested in the design that goes onto the shirt than the shirt itself, this is the perfect way to help her express her fashion designer interests. A cheaper, DIY approach requires only a printer and a relatively inexpensive package of printable iron-on fabric paper.
