How to Install Loose-Fill Insulation

    • 1). Climb up in the attic and inspect the soffit ventilation baffles. They need to be long enough to extend above the new level of insulation so that they can do their job. The baffles are the wood or Styrofoam system installed where the soffit meets the roof. They provide ventilation for the attic to reduce moisture build-up.

    • 2). Find a location for the insulation blower so that its hose can reach the entire attic space. If you must install it in your home, cover your personal items and carpets with old blankets. The blower produces a large amount of dust when in operation.

    • 3). Work your way to the farthest corner of the attic space with the blower tube. Remember to step only on top of the ceiling joists to avoid falling through.

    • 4). Instruct your assistant to turn on the blower and begin feeding insulation into its hopper.

    • 5). Spread the loose-fill insulation around the attic working from one side to the other. A good method is to work around the outside edges of the attic, then towards the hatch.

    • 6). Periodically check the depth of the loose-fill insulation with the ruler. It is important to apply an even amount for the most effective insulation. If you find high spots of insulation you can move it around gently with the garden fan rake.
