Are Temp Workers Eligible for Unemployment Benefits?
- If you lost your temporary position due to your own negligence or misconduct, you are not eligible to receive unemployment benefits. If the temporary work ended for no fault of your own but because, for example, the project was completed and no other work was available, you are eligible to receive unemployment compensation.
- Whether you were employed full time, part time or temporarily, you must show that you are currently able and available for work. If medical issues, time restraints or childcare responsibilities prevent you from being competent or available for work, you do not qualify for unemployment benefits. If you are capable of fulfilling job requirements and able to work during normal workday hours, you are eligible for unemployment compensation.
- Unemployment benefits are available to temporary employees who are actively seeking employment but have not been able to secure a job. According to most state's unemployment guidelines, a former temporary employee must be actively seeking employment. Keep a list of all contacts you have made relating to employment and maintain a record of all applications and resumes you have distributed.
- As a temporary employee, you must be willing to accept a job that is suitable to your skill level, pay scale and previous experience. This is especially important for temporary employees who are offered full-time employment. Rejecting a full-time position that is suitable work for you could cause you to lose all unemployment benefits.
