Sealing Sewer Pipes

    • 1). Mark the PVC sewer pipe at the point where the sewer section needs to be cut from the existing line and removed. Saw through the pipe at the mark using a handsaw, making the cut straight and at 90 degrees to the pipe. Remove the unwanted section of sewer pipe, marking and cutting it first into removable lengths if necessary.

    • 2). Scrape around the sawn pipe end with a utility knife to remove any plastic fragments or burrs -- fine sandpaper can also be used.

    • 3). Brush around the outside end of the PVC sewer pipe with PVC primer, to a width of 1 inch. Cans of primer and cement have brushes attached to their inside lids. Also prime the inside of a PVC end cap.

    • 4). Brush PVC cement onto the primed pipe end, as well as the inside of the end cap. Quickly push the end cap fully onto the pipe end, holding it in place for five seconds while the cement starts to set.
