When booking your gite accommodation in France, what should you look out for?

Gites are holiday accommodation – converted farm buildings, villas or apartments that can be found all over France. Originally they were encouraged by the French Government so that farmers could earn extra money.

Now, they are a business in their own right, although some are still attached to a farm. The original accommodation was quite basic but as peoples' expectations have changed, so has the standard of accommodation.

1 Star Gite should include the following:
  • Sleeping arrangements for the number of advertised – this may be sofa beds and or beds
  • Basic cooking facilities with the appropriate utensils
  • Bed linen etc not provided

2 Star Gite – as per a 1 Star Gite plus
  • A lounge area – may also contain a sofa bed
  • Bed Linen and towels provided
  • Better cooking equipment

3 Star Gite as per a 2 star plus
  • No Sofa beds
  • Outdoor space – a patio, courtyard, garden or veranda

4 Star Gite as per 3 Star Gite plus
  • Own BBQ
  • Swimming Pool – Shared
  • Other outdoor facilities such as boules pitch, fishing lake and children's play area

5 Star Gite as per 4 Star Gite plus
  • Quality fixtures and fittings
  • Antiques
  • Own swimming pool
  • Not in a gite complex

Obviously the price will vary depending on the facilities provided and where in France you stay.

La Petite Auberge is a gite complex in the southern Dordogne, near Eymet. On the above ratings, it is a 4 star complex as it is a complex and you share a pool. There are no sofa beds in any of the gites so everyone has a bed. The complex sits in over 2 hectares of land and has a 10m by 5m pool. Other facilities include a small fishing lake and boules pitch.

Each gite has a recently installed kitchen but as we find most of our guest like to BBQ, we have provided a purpose built BBQ for La Grande Maison and a Webber BBQ for the other gites. We are also carrying out a program of updating the bathrooms. We also try to make sure the kitchen knives are sharp and there is enough crockery and cutlery so you can eat well.
