Modern Stucco Methods

    Materials

    • New stucco methods are common on building sites around the world. These methods are used indoors and out and require only minor adjustments form older methods. The stucco applications are generally the same except for a few differences. The materials that are used have changed. Stucco is now sold in bags and is premixed. All you need to do is add water and mix with a drill and paddle bit. An extra ingredient has been placed in the stucco, as well. Latex has been added to strengthen the stucco, allowing it to be flexible and less prone to drying and flaking.

    Preparations

    • Years ago, you might prepare a base to apply the stucco to. This might include attaching wire mesh and a mortar skim coat prior to adding stucco. With the addition of latex to modern stucco powder, the base preparations are not needed. Not only does this speed up the job and save time, it also saves money. You can apply the new stucco mixes directly to any masonry base, such as blocks, bricks, or tiles, as long as the tiles are not slick.

    Smooth Stucco

    • A smooth stucco finish is desirable by many homeowners today. You can obtain this finish by rubbing the stucco down with a damp sponge. To do this, apply the stucco, let it set for 30 minutes, and wipe it with a damp sponge in circular motions. Take care not to remove the stucco from the wall. Gently rub the stucco into a smooth finish, washing the sponge in clean water often.

    Antique Finish

    • You can obtain an antique finish by applying stucco to brick of no more than 1/2-inch thick. Using the damp sponge, wipe the stucco smooth. However, rather than leaving the entire stucco application intact, wipe small spots down to the brick surface to give the appearance that the stucco has fallen off the brick. This stucco method works best when applied in brown or beige.
